Would you like credit with that?

Holly, my 20 year old daughter, was recently issued a new bank card for access to her current account….it also doubled as a credit card. Now the thing is she didn’t actively ask for the credit facility (approx $3,000) but didn’t think to say “no thanks.”

Subsequently she found out how easy it is to draw cash from the ATM on the credit facility. I freak out…explain the 20% interest thing and encourage her to go down the branch to remove the credit line.

Holly phones me from the branch and tells me that the guy behind the counter is patronising & confusing. I suggest she talks with someone else. She finds herself dealing with a mum who has late-teenage children, understands Holly’s ‘concern’ and whips the credit away. This spawns my idea.

If you could match your consumer’s needs and level of financial acumen with the life-stage experience of branch staff wouldn’t that be good? It happens at a business banking level so why not at this crucial stage when the use of credit needs to be carefully managed.

A marketing opportunity right there.

12 Earth-Hours

posted by Martyn on April 3rd, 2008 / filed under change, environment, experience, word of mouth

Earth sought revenge, in Melbourne, yesterday by serving up 12 ‘Earth-Hours’ ….in our house, at least.

I say revenge, not because of the relatively lack lustre performance by man and women-kind last Saturday for the official Earth Hour but because of the commercialism by some sponsors.

There were a number of sponsors for Earth Hour in Melbourne inc. Leo Burnett, WWFThe Age & Austereo. All good, but in a two horse newspaper-town, such as Melbourne, the newspaper that doesn’t get involved (the Herald Sun in this case) can usually be relied upon to ‘slant‘ their editorial.

Irrespective of Earth Hour’s degree of success the need to raise awareness of profligate energy wastage can only be good and surely deserves the collective support of all media as to what was good and what can be improved upon.

It’s arguable that The Age (and the Sydney Morning Herald) saw an opportunity to take the high ground from their competitor(s) but additionally Fairfax printed a 40-page Earth Hour special supplement which generated approx. $300,000 of advertising revenue. I’m not aware if this is being ploughed back into the Earth Hour cause or is happily resting on Fairfax’s bottom line.

I hope revenue and profit has not clouded their corporate social responsibility…

Project Virgle…a Virgin Google Partnership

posted by Dave Lee on April 2nd, 2008 / filed under brand, dave, fun, innovation

the goal?

“the establishment of a permanent human settlement on Mars”

Why aren’t all brands this cool???

Richard Branson goes on to say:

“In the years to come, we’ll be sending up a series of spaceships carrying (along with the supplies and tools needed to build the new colony) what eventually will be hundreds of Mars colonists, or Virgle Pioneers — myself among them.”

It’s great when brands partner “fellow” brands that share the same synergistic entrepreneurial energy to create something bigger and more meaningful then their everyday business. Injecting innovation and a great story into their brand to make ME as a user feel better using their services and, in a minuscule way, supporting a mission to Mars!

This year has seen both clients and media enjoy April fools.  Here is a list of of gags:

MIX FM hosts and Dancing With The Stars identities Sonia Kruger and Todd McKenney acted suprised when it was announced during their 7.30am bulletin that Hugh Jackman would front the toe-tapping series this year, replacing Daryl Somers. (Audio here >>)

Meanwhile, the Seven Network’s Sunrise program’s presenters played musical chairs.  Kochie was sports presenter and Mel read the news, while Mark Baretta and Natalie Barr played host? It was only for the day, and it didn’t take long for viewers to work it out.

But best of all…

Richard Branson’s Virgin Blue airline also got into the spirit of April Fool’s day.

The discount airline ran ads in newspapers offering the “no chair fare” - half priced fares for passengers willing to stand for the duration of the flight.

Free calf massages are offered for flights longer than two hours long. The offer closes at 6pm today.
