Social Media Statistics Australia – February 2013

Social Media Statistics Australia – February 2013

Wow – Cannot believe that February has already come and gone. This year seems to be already racing past us. So aside from myself being unable to keep up with the months, what have Australians been getting up to, particularly on social media?

The stats below represent the number of Australian users or unique Australian visitors to the below sites over February.

Here are the results:

1. Facebook – 11,677,680 Australian users/accounts (down approx 106,780). We suspect this is Facebook’s further removing spam accounts, which they have again been doing over the past couple months. Could also be Facebook addicts deleting their account in the new year?
2. YouTube – 11,000,000 UAVs (steady)
3. Blogspot – 3,200,000 (down 200,000)
4. Tumblr – 2,800,000 (down 100,000)
5. WordPress.com – 2,650,000 (down 50,000)
6. LinkedIn – 2,400,000 (steady)
7. Twitter – 2,200,000 Active Australian Users (see calculation from last month)
8. Instagram – 1,101,667 Active Australian Users
9. Flickr – 850,000 (up 20,000)
10. Pinterest – 630,000 (down 30,000)
11. Google Plus – approx 340,000 (my estimation)
12. MySpace – 310,000 (down 10,000)
13. Yelp – 220,000 (steady)
14. Reddit – 160,000 (down 5,000)
15. StumbleUpon – 90,000 (down 10,000)
16. Foursquare – 53,000 (down 3,000)
17. Digg – 36,000 (down 5,000)
18. Delicious – 31,000 (down 2,000)

Key Points to Note:

  • There is not a lot of movement in these figures but it is still interesting to keep track of.
  • The main networks for reaching an audience in Australia are Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter and Blogging platforms (WordPress and Blogspot/Blogger).
  • Many of the smaller networks are getting forgotten over time.
  • Instagram is still fresh in Australia and experiencing steady growth. A trend we have noticed is that many new accounts are now private.
